Here are the engagement pictures we made including some lovely pictures of young Oscar and Harry. I love real family weddings with children. They always make for the best pictures. Can’t wait till the wedding.

I always include engagement pictures for all my wedding couples as standard since it gives us the opportunity of a photo rehearsal for the big day. These  pictures were all taken at our main Studio in Rawdon and it shows how so many great shots can come in such a short space of time. Love the interaction Gemma and Sean had with the kids and those grab shots at the end with Dad’s glasses… Priceless!

Firstly, my good friend Guy Harris came round with a simple request to photograph a Men in Black style shot for a new marketing campaign he’s creating. Now, over the last couple of years, Guy has commissioned me to photograph a number of strange things so this was one of the easier shoots we’ve done together. (See some of the earlier, crazy pictures HERE )

Later in the afternoon, Make-up artist, Kirsty Fulford come to the studio with her latest project. It had taken her 4 hours to create and my word, it nearly scared the living daylights out of me.

We’re looking for one boy and one girl to become Toy testers for Armadillo over the coming year.

Just before every wedding, I always meet my couples to go through the particulars of their wedding day. Everyone is different and each couple has specific needs that I need to cater for when I photograph the day so this may be the last chance for me to take notes. It’s also a scary thing for many couples to be the centre of attention and be photographed all day. Most of my couples say they don’t really like being photographed and so this is the opportunity I have to put their minds at rest. Great photographs are made not by the technical things such as what camera you use or what aperture or shutter speed you set but by the relationship between the photographer and the couples.

Anyone can put on a camera face and smile on cue and if that’s what you want from your wedding photography then any photographer can do this perfectly. However, my couples come to me because they want relaxed, natural portraiture and this isn’t something that just happens. To make a couple look relaxed on camera, I find it helps if they really are relaxed. A preshoot, or engagement shoot like this, where we take the kids to the park for a play on the swings, helps enormously to produce relaxed, natural, fun expressions and this builds confidence that on the wedding day itself, these same relaxed expressions will also be photographed. Notice the lack of formal ‘camera faces’. This isn’t luck or the fact that Danielle and Kelvin are natural models (good looking though they undoubtedly are) – They are normal, just like you and me. (No matter how often I have my picture taken, I still hate it)

Great, relaxed portraits take a little time and effort to achieve. It’s a little like a rehearsal as we get to know each other. This is why I do this at the engagement shoot stage rather than on the big day itself. Everybody’s different and now I know Danielle and Kelvin and the two amazing lads a little better, we can be confident that the wedding pictures in May will look fabulous.

Here are they pictures… Starting off indoors, with a little studio lighting and then a brief walk to the park and a play on the swings. No fuss, great fun and some wonderful family pictures to treasure forever. Enjoy!
